Use a space which is clear of growing plants. Place your fermented food waste into a shallow trench which is approximately 30 cm deep. Cover with 25-50cm of topsoil to allow the food waste to break down. It takes around four weeks for your food waste to mix into the soil (a little longer in colder months).
Continue to build up the soil with applications of fermented waste until you are ready to plant. When plants are growing, dig your fermented food waste in between rows of plants, avoiding direct contact with plant roots.
If you don’t have much space, you can use:
Mix the fermented food waste with green waste at a ratio of 1:5 or 1:10. Mix this into the centre of your compost pile using an outer layer of green waste for protection. It is best to keep the compost heap covered.
